What to Expect at Your First Ayurvedic Consultation
Booking your first Ayurvedic consultation can feel like a step into the unknown. Here's exactly what to expect — from the questions your practitioner will ask to the recommendations you might receive.
If you've decided to book your first Ayurvedic consultation, you might be wondering what you're getting yourself into. Will it be formal? Uncomfortable? Confusing? The good news is that most first-time clients at AK Ayurveda leave their initial consultation feeling genuinely informed, understood, and excited about the personalised path ahead.
Here's a straightforward, honest guide to what your first Ayurvedic consultation will involve.
Before You Arrive
There's very little preparation required. We do ask that you avoid heavy exercise, alcohol, or a particularly large meal immediately before your appointment, as these can temporarily influence your pulse and physical presentation. Wear comfortable clothing and arrive without rush — giving yourself a calm, unhurried start will set a positive tone for the session.
It's helpful, though not essential, to come with some awareness of your recent sleep patterns, digestion, energy levels, and any specific concerns you'd like to discuss.
The Consultation Itself
Your practitioner will begin with a detailed conversation. This is one of the most distinctive features of an Ayurvedic consultation — it is genuinely thorough. Expect questions about:
- Your diet and food preferences (what you typically eat, what you crave, what doesn't agree with you)
- Your sleep quality and patterns
- Your digestion — including how regular you are, whether you experience bloating or discomfort, and how your appetite fluctuates
- Your energy levels through the day
- Your emotional patterns — how you respond to stress, whether you tend toward anxiety or irritability, how you feel in different seasons
- Your skin, hair, and physical characteristics
- Any specific wellbeing concerns you'd like to address
Nadi Pariksha (Pulse Assessment)
Your practitioner will typically carry out a Nadi Pariksha — an Ayurvedic pulse assessment — during the consultation. This involves gently placing three fingers on your wrist to assess the subtle qualities of your pulse. It's a non-invasive and painless experience, though you may find yourself curious about what the practitioner is sensing.
Your Personalised Recommendations
Based on the conversation and pulse assessment, your practitioner will share their assessment of your constitution (Prakriti) and any current imbalances (Vikriti). They'll then offer personalised recommendations, which may include:
- Dietary adjustments tailored to your dosha
- Daily routine suggestions (Dinacharya)
- Herbal preparations if appropriate
- Recommended Ayurvedic treatments that may support your wellbeing goals
Is One Consultation Enough?
A single consultation is a valuable and self-contained experience — you'll leave with meaningful, personalised insights and practical guidance you can begin implementing immediately. However, many clients find that a series of follow-up sessions, as recommendations are refined and results observed, offers the most transformative long-term benefit.
We warmly welcome you to your first consultation at AK Ayurveda in London. It's the beginning of a genuinely personalised journey toward better wellbeing, and we look forward to being part of it.
