Ritucharya: Seasonal Wellness the Ayurvedic Way
Ritucharya is the ancient Ayurvedic practice of adjusting your diet, routine, and self-care with the changing seasons. Discover how this seasonal wisdom may support your year-round wellbeing.
Ayurveda has always recognised that we are not separate from the natural world — we are intimately connected to it. The changing seasons bring shifts in temperature, humidity, daylight, and atmospheric quality that have a direct impact on our doshas and, by extension, our wellbeing. Ritucharya — the Sanskrit term for seasonal routine — is the Ayurvedic practice of consciously adapting your diet, lifestyle, and self-care to these seasonal shifts.
The Six Seasons of Ayurveda
Classical Ayurvedic texts describe six seasons (Ritus) in the Indian calendar. While the UK experiences four seasons rather than six, the underlying principle translates beautifully: each season carries distinct elemental qualities that influence our physiology and wellbeing, and our daily choices should reflect these changes.
Autumn and Early Winter: Vata Season
As the air becomes colder, drier, and more unpredictable — characteristic of a British autumn — Vata energy naturally increases in the environment and, potentially, within us. Ayurveda recommends grounding, warming practices during this period: warm, nourishing foods like soups and stews, regular Abhyanga with warming sesame oil, consistent sleep times, and reducing exposure to excessive wind and cold where possible.
Late Winter and Spring: Kapha Season
As the cold deepens and then gives way to the damp, heavy energy of a UK spring, Kapha tends to accumulate. This is classically considered the season of detoxification — a time to lighten the diet, increase movement, and support the body's natural cleansing processes. Lighter, spiced, and easily digestible foods are preferred, along with invigorating therapies like Udvartana.
Summer: Pitta Season
The warmth and intensity of summer elevates Pitta energy. This is a time to favour cooling foods and activities: fresh fruits, leafy salads, cooling herbal teas, and avoiding excessive heat and spice. Shirodhara with cooling oils and gentle, restorative yoga may be particularly supportive during the summer months.
Seasonal Ayurvedic Treatments
Many people find that scheduling Ayurvedic treatments at seasonal transitions — particularly in autumn and spring — helps to clear accumulated imbalances and set a positive foundation for the months ahead. At AK Ayurveda in London, we offer seasonal consultations and tailored treatment programmes designed to support your body's natural adjustment to each season.
